Something’s Sticking Out of My Ceiling… And It Has Scales
It started as a normal day until I happened to glance up at the ceiling — and that’s when I saw it. Something long, scaly, and slightly unsettling was poking out from between the drywall and the wall surface. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was imagining things. But upon closer inspection, it was definitely real — and definitely not just a crack or a bit of loose material.
What I was looking at appeared to be a tail. A reptile’s tail.
From the appearance — textured, slightly rough, and tapering to a point — it looked like it belonged to a lizard, possibly a common house gecko or a similar species. These creatures are known to sneak into warm spaces and often hide in tight spots, and apparently, the gap between my ceiling and the wall was the perfect hideout.
There was a chance, however small, that it could be a small snake. But based on the segmented look of the tail, it leaned more toward lizard than serpent. Another possibility? A piece of old shed skin that got caught — but the way it hung and the slight motion I noticed ruled that out.
Naturally, I didn’t try to pull it out. That’s a risk I’d rather leave to the professionals. Reptiles can be harmless, but disturbing one when it’s cornered is not a good idea.
So, what should you do if you notice something similar?
-
Don’t panic. Most lizards and small snakes are harmless.
-
Avoid touching or pulling it. You might injure the animal — or yourself.
-
Watch for movement. If it shifts or disappears, it’s likely alive.
-
Contact pest control or a local wildlife expert if you’re unsure.
For now, I’m keeping an eye on the situation (and maybe sleeping with one eye open). Who knew that a regular day could turn into a surprise wildlife encounter — right in my own ceiling?
